Best time to visit Utila for Diving

We’ve found that the very best months to go diving in Utila are from February until June. Temperatures are warm, as well as there being less rainfall (which means better underwater visibility conditions).

Is Utila worth visiting?

Throughout Central America we can find many tropical paradises, however Utila is quite distinct in its own right.

On the main part of the island (the east) we’ll find a great atmosphere of both locals and travelers, with many restaurants, bars and amenities to enjoy.

During the day you can visit various beautiful beaches around the island, with Bando Beach and Pumpkin Hill beach some of the best for white sands and relaxing.
Utila is also a must-visit for underwater exploring, with the conditions and wildlife here on another level.

It’s pretty easy to get here from the mainland, with large ferry services connecting from La Ceiba to Utila (you can pre-book your ferry spot here).

What is the best month to dive Utila?

Overall we’ve found the months of March and April to be the best for diving off the coast of Utila.

It’s right in the heart of the dry season, so water visibility conditions will be at their very best. Water temperatures will also be warmer too, which is perfect for both you and the local tropical wildlife which will be easier to spot (such as Whale Sharks, Turtles and others).

Whilst any of the other months in the dry season are great for snorkeling (between March and July), March and April are the overall best for its sea conditions.

How long should I spend in Utila?

Usually travelers spend between 4-7 days on Utila, given it’s the perfect place to chill out and relax where you’re not constantly looking over your shoulder.

This is also plenty of time to live it up and see the very best things on the island.

Those who plan to go diving (or learn how to) will want between 6-10 days, given courses can sometimes run longer (especially if you then opt for a more advanced course after your standard Open Water).

Remember that to get here you’ll first need to head to La Ceiba on the coast before taking the ferry over. For this reason it’s best to plan extra time seeing other awesome Honduran destinations before heading over.

Top things to do in Utila

Now let’s take a look at some of the very best things you can do when in Utila.

Relax on White Sand Beaches

As with any tropical island, one of the main things on the schedule is to find a good beach to hit the hay on. And given we’re in the Caribbean, this means we’ll have many beautiful white sand beaches to choose from.

Bando Beach is by far the most popular, and is easily accessible from the Main Street through town (it’s just a 5-10 minute walk from the busy area of town). Here we’ll find many facilities for renting beach chairs and getting those cocktails in, making it a pretty good spot to regularly head to and from daily.

On the other side of the bay (heading west from Bando) we have the more relaxed Chepes Beach, which is another picturesque white-sand beach which is more chill and less built-up.

If you want a quiet and more remote slice of paradise, then we recommend hiring an ATV and exploring around the island, where there’s many to choose from such as Pumpkin Hill beach.

The beaches in Utila alone make it a great place to add onto any Central American Backpacking Route.

Go Diving

These waters off the coast of Honduras are teeming with exotic wildlife, which makes Utila one of the very best places to go diving in all of Latin America.

Part of the Mesoamerican Reef (which is the second largest on earth), we’ll find many types of sharks, turtles and other jaw-dropping marine species here. There’s plenty of rental companies all over the island, and you can even pre-book a slot in advance (perfect for those only coming for a day or two).

If you want to learn how to dive then you’re also in the perfect place too, as there’s plenty of experienced dive schools offering some of the cheapest rates in all of Latin America (not to mention you’ll also get to see incredible wildlife all around you too).

As we’ve already mentioned in this article, if diving is a must for you then it’s best to come between March and July where there’s less rainfall impacting visibility conditions.

Get Stuck into the Local Culture

One of the best things about Utila is that it has a much different culture compared to the Honduran mainland. And whilst we’re all for Latin culture, it’s always nice to switch it up for a more chill Caribbean atmosphere every once in a while.

Utila is the perfect place to do this, where locals are much friendlier and patient, and the roads are much less hectic (although you’ll still want to watch out for a flying ATV every now and then!).

baleada honduras

There’s also many local restaurants located along the main strip through town where you can try traditional Honduran cuisine. Baleadas are a national staple, which are similar to tacos but are filled with all kinds of treats (you can choose from various meats, vegetables and spices).

They’re also super cheap too which is perfect for keeping costs low whilst traveling Central America.

At night there’s also many Caribbean-style bars to enjoy drinks at, before heading out for a heavier night in places like Tranquila.

Visit the Iguana Research & Breeding Station

One of the most unique things you can do on Utila is to visit the Iguana Research Station. The island is home to the Utila Spiny-Tailed Swamper Iguana, which are found within the local mangrove forests.

As species had been declining, they’ve now set up this conservation project to help rebuild population numbers.

Here we can visit these beautiful iguana species, whilst knowing that our visit will help improve the quality of facilities here. We’ll also see every step of the process too, from the tiny eggs laid to when baby iguanas begin to roam the place.

The Iguana Research & Breeding Station also offers volunteering programs too which start from three weeks, so if you fall in love with these iguanas after your visit, you can easily stay on too!

They offer several rooms to stay within the Iguana Station, and you don’t need to know Spanish to be on-boarded in their volunteering program.

Head to Roatán for the Day

Whilst Utila has its fair share of cool things to see and do, there’s also a couple of other nearby islands worth exploring too.

roatan honduras

Guanaja is the best for remote jungle, whilst Roatán has arguably the best diving in the entire Caribbean. Here you can head out and have a good chance of spotting rare wildlife such as Hammerhead Sharks and Reef Sharks, as well as enjoying the warm waters.

Roatán is also much bigger than Utila, so naturally there’s many other novel experiences to be had. This includes visiting an animal sanctuary where you can meet lots of sloths and monkeys, and also rent your own ATV to explore the island at your own pace.

You can do all of these activities on this all-inclusive day tour, where you’ll also head on a zip-line through the thick rainforest.

Finally, Roatán is home to arguably the best beach on the continent: West Bay Beach. A regular on most World’s Top 20 Beach Lists, here you can enjoy the scenic landscapes whilst taking dips in the Caribbean waters.
